He too has always has a lot of secreations which clog his airway and cause him to stop breathing, that has been since birth.Ĭognitively, they say he might be ok, he is reaching milestones, but a little later than normal. His main problem is the swallowing and his secretions. He cannot swallow still but does have a gag reflex. But now he only has the oxygen and other meds and G-tube and a suctioning machine. They still have him as hypotonic but with hypertonia as well. He is now off the breathing treatments and monitors. They suspected some disorder that I can't even remember now - dy something genetic, a really long name that in infant severe cases was fatal. He is a fighter, he made it, diapram works, lungs are fine! He was discharged home at 4 months with a apnea monitor, oxygen, a G-tube, a suction machine, breathing treatments and heart monitor. They preparred us for his passing when the ventilator would come out. In October they told us he wasn't going to make it, his diagram was not working and left lung collapsed while on the ventilator. He had hypotonia as well and some sort of neurological issue. He was off and on a ventilator for 4 months while in the NICU. He was born with no suck/swallow/gag reflux. I am an aunt of Milo, who 6 months old now. Taylor had been drinking from bottle before we discovered his unsafe swallow so it may be different.

You had better ask a professional before you do this though. I think dipping it in milk helped him to learn to swallow aswell as it was a tiny drip at a time. When he is hungry now he sucks his dummy like crazy. It gave him a feeling of associating food and the suck motion of the dummy. One thing I did from the start was dip his dummy in milk every time he had food down his tube. I don't know how or why but he is slowly learning to swallow effectively. Our suction machine is in the back of the cupboard now waiting to be collected. I guess what I'm trying to say is, there is hope. We have been able to start him on tiny bits of baby food (he is 7 months). Over the past 3 months since he has been on an NG tube and nil by mouth he has learnt to control his own secretions and is swallowing so much better. The suction machine was really easy to use and I just made sure it was set up all the time so it became part of life. He is unable to drink from a bottle as the fluid has to be so thick it is too hard for him to get out. He used to choke on his own saliva and just stop breathing for a few seconds, it scared the life out of us. We used a suction machine when we first came home and it was such a godsend. Just a quick reply I'm afraid as just reading this between my son vomiting from stomach bug!! Taylor suffers from severe aspiration as the nerves that control swallowing were damaged at birth. Im not really sure what answers im looking for on here i just thought it might help us to hear from other parents who have been throught the same thing and any tips would be greatly apprieciated. Have any of you mums had to use the suction machines? we are scared to move him without giving oral suction because the secretions get stuck in his throat and he will brady and desat which scares the life out of us. He had no gag reflex or suck or swallow but we encourage him to take his dummy and he likes putting his finger in his mouth we think he sucks it but mostly chomps, he has gained a gag reflex so now im praying that soon he will start to swallow as he suffers terrible with secretions.
